Fractional Brothers

© Rudolph 2009

My brothers and I wanted to go

to the county fair.

We asked our Pa for money.

He said we’d have to share.

He only had one dollar

to split between us four

so we had one quarter each

as we headed out the door.

So, each one of us had

one quarter out of four.

Each one only had 25 cents

and we didn’t have anymore.

1 out of 4 is

 a fraction of what exists.

1 out of 4

is written just like this: 1/4

1/4 can be written

in a way to represent

a percentage of the dollar

which is 25 percent.

This was not enough.

I really wanted more.

A quarter buys too little

and I was really rather sore.

So, I went to brother Frank

and snatched his quarter from his hand.

I really needed it more

and I thought he would understand.

Instead he cried and screamed

He was really upset

He ran home to Pa

yelling a very obscene threat.

So, now I had

two quarters out of four.

Now, I had 50 cents

but I didn’t have anymore.

2 out of 4 is

 a fraction of what exists.

2 out of 4

is written just like this: 2/4

2/4 can be written

in a way to represent

a percentage of the dollar

which is 50 percent.

This was not enough.

I really wanted more.

Two quarters buys too little

and I was really rather sore.

So, I went to brother John

and snatched his quarter from his hand.

I really needed it more

and I thought he would understand.

Instead he cried and screamed

He was really upset

He ran home to Pa

yelling a very obscene threat.

So, now I had

three quarters out of four.

Now I had 75 cents

but I didn’t have anymore.

3 out of 4 is

 a fraction of what exists.

3 out of 4

is written just like this: 3/4

3/4 can be written

in a way to represent

a percentage of the dollar

which is 75 percent.

This was not enough for me.

I really wanted more.

Three quarters buys too little

and I was really rather sore.

So, I went to brother Tom

and snatched his quarter from his hand.

I really needed it more

and I thought he would understand.

Instead he cried and screamed

He was really upset.

He ran home to Pa

yelling a very obscene threat.

So, now I had

four quarters out of four.

Now I had 100 cents (1 dollar)

But I didn’t have anymore.

4 out of 4 is

all of what exists.

4 out of 4

is written just like this: 4/4

4/4 can be written

in a way to represent

a percentage of the dollar

which is 100 percent.

I arrived at the fair

and couldn’t wait to try my luck.

Only to find out

that the entrance fee was two bucks.

So, I went back home

to ask my Pa for more

My brothers and he

were waiting at the door.

Pa gave me a stern lecture

then he gave me a broom.

I had to sweep the entire house

and then go to my room.

I learned my lesson.

I will never do it again.

A dollar isn’t much.

Perhaps I needed ten.
