Direct Objects (DO) 

A direct object will follow a transitive verb. A transitive verb is an action verb that has one or more objects. Direct Objects can be nouns, pronouns, phrases, or clauses. For now, we will focus just on Direct Object nouns and pronouns. 

DO Nouns 

     He kicked the ball.  The action verb is “kicked” and the direct object is “ball.” 

      kicked what? ball 

      I ate a cupcake.  The action verb is “ate” and the direct object is “cupcake.” 

       ate what? cupcake  

      I ran home.   The action verb is “ran” and the direct object is “home.” 

       ran where? home 

      She hit her brother.  The action verb is “hit” and the direct object is “brother.” 

       hit who? brother

 

DO Pronouns  

* These will be object pronouns and never subject pronouns. 

   .  She likes him. The action verb is “likes” and the direct object is “him.” 

       likes who? Him 

       They ate them.  The action verb is “ate” and the direct object is “them.” 

        ate what? them (perhaps jelly beans) 

       You beat me.   The action verb is “beat” and the direct object is “me.” 

       beat who? me
